A synopsis of the movie

Smell of Rain 【雨之味】, a Mandarin language film, is a simple poignant story about Xiao Qi (Nathaniel Ho), a lonely young man, trapped in his childhood grief of being abandoned just before a rainstorm. The film uses the recurring motif – “the smell of rain” to transport the protagonist back to his painful past. It explores the bittersweet, heartbreaking and yet tender moments that Xiao Qi experiences as he is reminded of the past while being shown the promise of the future.

Xiao Qi, together with a childhood best friend, Kong Long (Trey Ho), creates a haven where the rest of the world is kept at bay. The arrival of a girl, Li Er (Leah Low) rudely disrupts the dynamics of this static world and Xiao Qi is forced to confront reality as he struggles to break free from the shackles of his past. In the process, he learns to live by learning to love - but will it be too late? Ending with a surprising twist, Smell of Rain sends a message of courage, hope and fresh beginnings.

Produced, directed and written by Gloria Chee, the film features fresh young local faces, Nathaniel Ho, Trey Ho and Leah Low in the lead roles. Gloria graduated from the pioneer batch of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Film Sound and Video (FSV) program and is the first FSV graduate to direct a full-length feature film.

Smell of Rain is a labour of love for everyone involved in the production. The film is beautifully lensed and edited by the intuitive and talented Terris Chiang, a veteran editor.

While the entire film’s scoring and arrangement is helmed by Tay Chee Wei, there are two theme songs, tailored specially to instill a delicate overall mood for the film. They are both written and composed by the team at the Lee Wei Song School of Music. The solo song, “Reach” describes the loneliness and isolation of Xiao Qi while “Never Left”, a duet muses on the bond of friendship. Both songs are sung by Nathaniel Ho and Trey Ho, the lead actors themselves.

We've caught the movie tonight! I like it! It may be a bit slow at the start but it draws you in slowly without you realising when bit by bit Xiaoqi's story is unravelled.  And at the end when the twist is revealed, you empathise and feel even more for Xiaoqi because it just strikes home how desolate Xiaoqi's world was before Li Er came into his life.  Liked the ending very much.  Happy to see Xiaoqi stepping out of his monochomatic world (Hah! He finally wears COLOR... canary yellow teeshirt in the basketball court scene!)

Gloria (Director), Jalyn (Line Producer) and Leah (our shy pretty female lead, Li Er) took the time to come down and had a nice little Q&A/dialogue session with the audience after the screening.  And through all that they so generously shared with us, you come to appreciate the movie even more.  Many aspects of the movie fell into place for the audience and Gloria was especially candid with us about her vision… her experience… warmed to the audience instantly!

Of course the movie wasn’t perfect but hey! Considering the limitations the cast and crew had to work with and that it was a maiden effort for many of them, it’s really good!  Hmmm… maybe I’ll go watch it again… hehe…

The love that went into the making was apparent and it shines through the movie.  It has HEART.

It also had a very morose-looking Nat… who, lemme see, didn’t smile once thoughout the movie… haha… of cos the script called for it lah but then again, it was also nice to see this “deeper” side… the subtle nuances he had to portray for Xiao Qi’s character...

To be shallow about it, besides the fact that Nat is EVERYWHERE, there are A LOT of close ups of Nat  so… hmmmm… that’s another reason to watch it again! Yeay!

To the fans who are planning to catch it – Good for you! To those still thinking about it, 2 words for you – NAT HO.
